A Driver Egress Drill Before a Track Session Should Test the Real Cockpit

A driver who can climb out of a quiet car in the workshop may still hesitate when the harness is tight, the window net is latched and the steering wheel is in place. A short egress rehearsal before the first session should reproduce that real cockpit, then turn every awkward movement into a specific correction rather than a faster-looking stopwatch result.

The current FIA GT3 technical regulations provide a useful test design: the driver wears normal equipment, the belts are fastened, the steering wheel is placed in the least convenient position and the doors are closed. Those rules specify seven seconds through the driver's door and nine through the passenger door. A club car may sit under different regulations, so those figures are not a universal pass mark here. The transferable lesson is that a meaningful drill tests the complete race-ready arrangement, not a simplified cockpit.

Set up the cockpit exactly as it will leave the garage

Start with the same seat position, padding, helmet, head-and-neck restraint, gloves and suit that the driver will use on track. Tighten every belt to its driving position. The FIA 8853-2016 harness standard treats the harness as an integrated restraint system designed for race and crash loads. That is why practising with loose shoulder straps gives the wrong answer: it removes the restriction the driver must actually manage.

Close the door, attach the window net and put the steering wheel where it will be during the run. If the car has a removable wheel, the release should be operated in its normal orientation rather than pre-loosened. Gloves matter because a catch that feels obvious to a bare hand can be difficult when the driver is warm, breathing hard and working by touch.

For cars using racing nets, reachability is not a cosmetic detail. The FIA's Racing Nets Installation Specification says the seated driver must be able to reach and open both quick-release mechanisms with the belts tightened, while rescue crews must also be able to access them. During the rehearsal, the observer should look for a handle hidden behind a shoulder, a strap that falls back across the opening or a net that needs a second hand.

Watch the sequence, not only the time

Use one calm attempt first. The crew member stays outside the car and records the order in which the driver touches each release. A sensible sequence will vary with the cockpit, but it should be repeatable: identify the stopping state, release the main restraint, clear the net or door opening, move the wheel when required, then lift past the seat and cage without trapping a boot or cable.

Note the first control the driver searches for. A hesitation often shows that a release handle is poorly placed, visually lost or difficult to recognise through gloves.
The tightest clearance
Watch the helmet, shoulder, knee and boot as they pass the seat edge, wheel, cage and door opening. The goal is not to teach the driver to force through a pinch point.
The item that falls back
Record any belt, net or cable that returns into the escape path after release. A component can operate correctly yet still obstruct the next movement.

Do not coach the driver through the movement while the clock is running. Finish the attempt, then ask the driver where the sequence felt uncertain. The outside view and the driver's tactile report describe different parts of the same problem. A clean release that still requires an improvised twist is evidence for adjustment, not a reason to celebrate the elapsed time.

Controls needed in an emergency must remain usable from the restrained driving position. The FIA's vehicle adaptation guidelines state that emergency or kill switches should be reachable and safety functions such as the fire extinguisher should be operable with the belts tightened. Even on an unmodified cockpit, the drill is a practical moment to confirm that a label, wheel rim or new cable has not made a familiar control harder to find.

Turn one awkward movement into a go or no-go decision

Change only one thing before the repeat. That might mean returning the net release to its intended position, rerouting a loose communication lead, correcting a removable-wheel procedure or restoring the documented seat setting. Any change to a homologated restraint, seat, cage or net installation belongs with the equipment manufacturer, vehicle constructor and the applicable series rules; an egress rehearsal is not permission to redesign safety hardware in the paddock.

Repeat the full setup after the correction, not just the difficult motion. If the driver can now perform the same sequence without a search, snag or forced body angle, write the result in the session notes with the seat position and equipment configuration. If the obstruction remains, the defensible decision is to pause the car and obtain the right technical help before track release.

A useful egress drill is quiet and specific. It does not reward a theatrical leap from a half-prepared cockpit. It shows whether the real driver, in the real equipment, can recognise each release and clear the opening without improvisation. That evidence gives the crew something actionable before the first lap: confirm the setup, correct one documented problem, or keep the car in the garage.
