The GP2 Series was created by Bernie Ecclestone, Falvio Briatore and Bruno Michel, to provide an opportunity for young drivers to showcase their racing abilities in front of the F1 paddock.

Since its launch in 2005, GP2 has undoubtedly proven why it deserves the unofficial title of strongest Formula 1 feeder category. With speeds that match the final few rows on the F1 grid, the series combines a fast, safe, high tech yet gadget free car, with experience and talent.

The series exists on a tri-annual basis, a new generation of car created every three years, yet upgraded continuously to ensure the challenge for both team and drivers are maintained. Through its partnerships with Renault and Bridgestone, two highly respected names in the business, GP2 is able to continually evolve as well as to be both affordable and technologically advanced.

Operating at a fraction of the cost of an F1 team, but nevertheless racing at the same tracks in Europe, on the same weekends, the GP2 community provide unmissable single seat racing for fans and teams alike.

This year embarks on the fifth season of the GP2 Series and to date as many as 33 drivers have received the opportunity to drive an F1 car as a result of their GP2 experiences!


Friday: 30 minute morning practice session, 30 minute afternoon qualifying session.

Saturday: 180km afternoon race - mandatory pit stop - two tyres must be changed.

Sunday’s grid is decided by Saturday’s race result, with the top eight positions reversed. Therefore Saturdays’ race winner starts Sunday in 8th, and eighth place starts in pole position.

Sunday: 120km morning race - pit stops not mandatory.

Championship Points: 2 points for Saturday pole position, Top eight finishers on Saturday: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 points, Top six finishers on Sunday: 6-5-4-3-2-1 points. 1 point is awarded per race for fastest lap, so long as the driver finishes in the top ten.
