Bahrain Qualifying

The International Circuit of Bahrain will be host to this years GP2 season opener this weekend following today’s triumphant qualifying session.

Following a run of successful pre-season tests, Super Nova returned to the Middle East with a promising new driver pairing; GP2 returnee Luca Filippi and British F3 Champion Mike Conway.

In hot desert conditions the Super Nova duo quickly proved that they are capable of setting quick times. Mike ran new tyres to start, & provisionally led the way before returning to the pit lane for minor changes. He returned to the track to complete a total of 9 laps and remained amongst the quickest, qualifying an admirable 10th position. Meanwhile team-mate Luca made a faultless flying lap (1:40.873) and when no one could better it, claimed his first ever GP2 pole position for tomorrows race.

The team look forward to the first race of the season Saturday afternoon.

Team Principal David Sears was very happy with the days’ outcome: "Super Nova are back in business!! What a fantastic result for the team. Luca rose to the occasion magnificently, achieving his first ever GP2 pole position. He has started as he means to go on, and is full of confidence for the new season.

Mike Conway backed him up with an excellent 10th place in his debut 2007 qualifying session in GP2. He’s done a great job, & he knows he can go quicker."

Mike Conway said of today’s qualifying " There was more time to be had on my first set of tyres I think, and we didn’t get a chance to optimise the second set. If we had of we could have been P2. But we have a good pace, and anything can happen in a race, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow!"

Luca Filippi commented "We only made a few small changes during the session, because the car was perfect! It was very important to start strong, as it helps with confidence, and shows everyone we only have one goal! We have a consistently good pace, so I’m not worried about tomorrow, just very pleased with how its gone today!"
