Bahrain Race 2

A triumphant & well-deserved finish for the Super Nova team today as Luca Filippi finished 3rd, his second podium in as many races; Team mate Mike Conway gaining an impressive 19 places, to finish 5th, after the team worked until the small hours of the morning to resolve Mike’s gearbox issues from race 1.

The eventful race, disrupted by two safety cars, saw only 17 out of 26 cars complete the 23 laps around Bahrain’s state of the art circuit this morning; the top eight positions reversed from yesterdays Feature race. From eighth & 24th on the grid Luca and Mike skilfully avoided all crash debris & drove with determination & consistency.

Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre took his first ever GP2 win today when Borja Garcia dropped out, promoting the Dams driver to the front. Timo Glock not only took second place, but also picked up fastest lap point for iSport.

Super Nova scored a total of 18 points this weekend, leading the way in the driver Championship.

Team Principal David Sears: “Another fine performance from both Super Nova drivers. On the top 8 reversed grid for the sprint race, Luca raced through from 8th to 3rd. to another fine podium finish! Mike started at back & drove a storming race, to make up for yesterdays problematic gearbox issues. Fantastically driven by both Luca & Mike!

The points now mean we are that leading the driver, and second in the Teams championship.

Luca Filippi “We made an aggressive set up to try & get a strong positioning on the first lap, this was very important. I got a good start & was able to pass Garcia. We were very quick, but I started losing grip on rear, and I was forced to back off. I’m really pleased with how this weekend has gone, & cant wait until Barcelona.”

Mike Conway “This is the first overtaking I’ve done in a GP2 race. I had some good battles with Garcia and Ammermueller, & would have liked to have passed Garcia, but I am very happy to have scored points. We need to score at every event if we want to be in with a chance at winning the Championship. I am very happy!”
