Barcelona Race 1

It was a short-lived & frustrating race for the Super Nova team today, with both drivers forced out at turn one, amongst a chaotic start.

Following an aborted first lap, Mike Conway began slowly, taking an inside route to come along side Giorgio Pantano. Unfortunately with no space to take the corner he made contact with the Campos car, which in turn pushed into Luca Filippi’s rear wing. Filippi, who had made a brilliant start, was unable to avoid the collision & was put into the sand, retiring instantly. Moments later, Mike was caught up by Xandi Negrao, who launched into the back of the Super Nova car, ending their races immediately.

A Safety car encouraged all but the front three to take a trip to the pits, altering the lead. Timo Glock who had been in front, completed the 39 laps in 2nd position after young Brazilian Bruno Senna took his first ever GP2 win for Arden International. Lucas Di Grassi came in 3rd for ART.

Team Principal David Sears: “After a slow start Mike attempted to out brake everyone into the corner, but unfortunately came together with Giorgio Pantano. The same incident also took off team mate Luca Flippi. Therefore the Super Nova drivers retired early and collected no points today. With both cars starting from back, it will be difficult to get any points this weekend”

Mike Conway  “I got a bad start, came along side Pantano & I held into the corner. But with no room, the cars touched & I went onto the grass. When I got back on track Negrao hit me hard from behind and unfortunately it was race over for me.”

Luca Filippi “I got a good start, but from my point of view I didn’t see what happened next. I just feel it is a shame to have missed out on some big points today and will be a tough race tomorrow to try and score, starting from the back.”
