Spa Race 2

The two Super Nova cars had a one on one battle today to collect another two valuable points here at the Spa GP2 Sprint race in Belgium.

From fourth and seventh on the grid, the Super Nova cars were slow out of the box. More than can be said for championship leader Timo Glock who was pushed off & crashed into the wall in the warm up. Several laps into the 18-lap race & the teammates were running consecutively in 5th & 6th.  British F3 champion Mike lapping among the quickest, managed to pass his Super Nova team mate with just three laps to go, and was closing in on the BCN car in front when he passed the chequered flag in 5th. Unfortunately for the Italian, Luca suffered some gearbox problems & in the closing laps slipped to seventh place, leaving just one race weekend left to chase for a possible second place in the driver championship.

The final round of the GP2 2007 season will take place in Valencia, Spain on 29th-30th September.

Team Principal David Sears “Both Super Nova drivers did not have good starts today, but they both avoided any first lap damage, providing most of the TV coverage as they battled with each other for 5th place. In the end Mike Conway came out on top, & Luca Filippi slipped to 7th at the flag with gearbox shifting problems. Lucas Di Grassi finished 3rd, & although Timo Glock crashed on the warm up lap, he still leads the championship with Luca Filippi still strong 3rd place.
Super Nova are still strong third in the teams championship behind ART in 2nd place. If both drivers have a good end of season race in Valencia in two weeks time, it is still possible for the team to snatch 2nd in the teams championship!  ”

Mike Conway “I had a bad start this morning and lost some places. But I managed to nip into the inside of the corner, & came out clean gaining several positions back. Then I just had to move forward, because I knew I was quicker. Luca was getting a tow off Tung; I got stuck behind him and was losing a second a lap, until I got the chance to pass three laps before then end. Two more laps I’d have had it!… It was good to get the two points today! I tested in Valencia last year, which went well, so I’m looking forward to last race there.”

Luca Filippi “The start was nothing special, but I was up one position in 6th … Then Villa had a penalty, and I caught Tung up, & there was some fighting going on between us! Then I made a mistake and went wide. We also had a small gearbox problem, especially downshifting from mid race, so was quite difficult to manage the car. I am looking ahead to Valencia. ”
